THE MOST MEMORABLE OPENING MOVIE SCENES
WRITTEN BY KARAN TELI
A films opening scene is by far one of the most important moments of an entire movie. This scene has to draw the audience in immediately and make them feel like they HAVE to keep watching; it doesn’t even have to be relevant to the storyline of the movie, but you wouldn’t even find that out till later. With that being said, here are 6 opening movie scenes (in no particular order) that did exactly that for me!
This is the most ruthless and memorable opening scene for me. Being a kid when I first watched this movie, it truly showed me that there is a side to the world that I’ve truly never seen or experienced. How something as simple as going to the store can change or end your life. Like Caine himself says at the end of this scene; ‘you go into the store to buy a beer and leave an accessory to double murder and robbery. It’s like that in the hood sometimes.’
This is the saddest scene on the list. It also has probably the best acting on the list. Christoph Waltz is incredible. This is the first scene that MANY people would have seen him in. Acting as one of Hitler’s minions during the Nazi era and ordering the execution of an innocent and helpless family, when they almost, almost got away with hiding. Cold-Blooded.
A couple sitting a table, in a diner, in what looks like the early hours of the morning. How is this memorable? How is this one of the best ever? The greatness of Tarantino shines again. The scene ends with the woman, telling the entire diner ‘not to move or she’ll execute every last one of you.’ Just like that, the scene ends and we have no idea if ‘Honey Bunny’ executes everyone. So we keep watching till we find out.
The magnum opus for a horror movie opening scene. Wes Craven did it perfectly. Drew Barrymore is one of the biggest stars in the world at this point; she’s on the front of the poster for the movie! 11 minutes later, she’s dead, hanging from a tree for her parents to come home and find her. That showed us that in this movie; nobody is safe. Her captain of the football team boyfriend was gutted and lay dead in the back garden. After this scene we have to know who the killer is. Not to mention; this scene gave us the infamous ‘what’s your favourite scary movie?’ quote.
Tarantino’s finest. Crazy to think that this is the first ever Quentin Tarantino scene. It’s just 8 guys around a table talking about anything and everything. Being real, normal people. It’s as if you’re watching yourself as one of the characters when you watch this scene. That’s the greatness of Tarantino. The foreshadowing in this scene is amazing too. They prepare for the biggest robbery of their lives, but of course, at the time of the scene, you have no idea that’s what is happening. You’re just fascinated too see what these guys are up to.
The masterful and intense bank robbery scene. It has everything from zip-lining across a city, double barrelled shotguns and humour. We’re introduced to the dark and sadistic villain that is The Joker right from the opening scene, with the way he manipulates his entire entourage to kill each other, before he reveals himself to the audience without any remorse for what he’s done. Masterful. One of the best, if not the best, character introductions in movie history.
