MY LIFE, NOT YOURS
WRITTEN BY CHARLES ODUGBESAN
One of the most powerful tools we as people posses are the words that we speak. Our words can comfort, reassure, encourage, degrade and offend. In short, they have the ability to instil some form of emotional reaction, either within ourselves or in others. Ask a king, a chief in command, a minister or a politician. These are all men/women who need others to have belief in them and the primary method at their disposal is the words they speak. So let’s talk words…
Ever had somebody tell you that you couldn’t do something? I’m not talking illegal activity or something that’s just downright stupid! I mean when somebody attempts to hinder your ambitions and dissuade you from achieving a personal goal. A naysayer. Whilst a naysayer usually takes the form of someone who may not like you or is envious of you in some way; don’t be fooled! It could be anyone. Friends, even family, are well capable of telling you that there are certain things that you cannot do or strive to achieve. Those closest to you can sometimes be guilty of perhaps trying to control you or keep you at their level so to speak and force you to live their life. Negativity is a very real form of manipulation.
Now what depends on YOU is your mental reaction to the words of a naysayer. Naturally, you being told you can’t do something can shake your confidence. You may start to second guess your own ability and desire, questioning if you really are cut out to chase a particular dream you have. You might even question why you had that dream in the first place and subsequently pursue a different path. To me there is nothing more cruel than somebody else seeking to curb your own ambition.
On the other hand, negative words can spark an added determination in you. A type of defiance that actually fuels your desire to achieve and prove the person that told you ‘NO’ wrong. This is the power of positive thinking. It takes a great mentality to be able to turn a negative into a positive. Everyone should be encouraged at all times to do this, quite simply because everyone is more than capable of doing so.
At the end of the day, you and only you are the master of your own course. Imagine nobody had the confidence or desire to achieve a goal no matter how far fetched. Imagine how limited as a people we would be if we were told ‘NO’. Marie Curie, Galileo, Beethoven, Walt Disney, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Mahatma Ghandi. There’s an endless list. Just imagine these people, all of whom will go down in history being told ‘NO’ and the effect that would have had on us all. It’s all about turning negative words and thought directed at you into positive energy and using that to give you the belief that there isn’t anything you can’t do and there isn’t any feat you can’t achieve with some hard work and dedication. It’s your life… not anyone else’s!!
