We’re ready for a Black James Bond… and Idris Elba is the perfect man for it
Words by Charles Odugbesan
So this week the bookies and the UK public are placing Idris Elba in pole position to replace Daniel Craig as the legendary James Bond, ahead of the likes of Aiden Turner and Tom Hardy. This will happen subsequent to Craig’s final outing in Bond 25 which is due for release in October 2019.
Of course, the possibility of Hackney born Elba being the new Bond hasn’t sat well with everyone. The right wing are up in arms, Katie Hopkins has taken to Twitter… all sorts of prejudiced outrage is ensuing over, really and truly, such a trivial topic. Have a look at this video of Hopkins (universally regarded as one of social media’s biggest a**holes) voicing her opinion on Elba and the Bond role.
Now the good news is that Hopkins has no influence whatsoever over the casting, directing or (with these videos that look like they’ve filmed in a shed) production of any movie let alone one from the Bond franchise. The problem with Hopkins is that she’s a 43 year old dinosaur with prehistoric and overtly racist notions of how Britain should operate.
To Hopkins and all those who agree with her I say… Get with the times! The Mayor of London (Born in Tooting) is of Asian descent! The Prime Minister is female! The England football team we all just spent the whole summer cheering on at the World Cup is rich in culture with players from multiple different backgrounds coming together. They’re a representation of the majority of highly populated cities in this country. The same way that this country has has been culturally enriched and complimented throughout the years is how the James Bond character has evolved, with each new lead bringing a more modern feel as the late Sir Roger Moore stated. Whose to say that Idris wouldn’t be a perfect depiction of today’s ‘British Gentlemen’? To separate yourself from what is happening around you is to demonstrate pure ignorance.
As for Idris Elba himself, the fact that he is even shortlisted as a candidate to play such a role is a testament to the man’s acting ability and popularity, both amongst his peers and we as an audience. James Bond is a fictional character… a role… a part. So with ANY role, an aspiring actor should only be judged on their ability to play the part and not have their ethnicity or the childhood memories of near pensioners held against them. What’s most telling is that you’d be hard pressed to find someone who genuinely does not believe that Elba will suit the role fantastically, fashioning it with his own charm and identity the way the Craig’s, Dalton’s, Moore’s and Connery’s before him did.
This isn’t about race, although race does clearly play a part. But more importantly, this is about we as people embracing our culture and not denying opportunities to more than worthy candidates. Katie you’re an a**hole!!
