Dragon Ball Fighterz – Review
WRITTEN BY HUSAM ELGENIED
Continuing the trend of dropping hotly anticipated games in 2018, Dragon Ball FighterZ came out on the same day as Monster Hunter and the game has already been awarded with ‘best fighter of the year’ and a possible shout for ‘game of the year’. I am here to see if it is worthy of those nominations; so without any further ado lets get into this review.
I should start off by saying; I did not like Dragonball… the game that is, not the anime. However, before I get into that, I want to start off with the positives; the visuals. This Dragonball took a much more stylistic approach which is very similar to the anime. The fighters look like they have just been picked off from the show and just thrown in and that is not a bad thing because it makes the characters and their fighting moves infinitely better looking than the previous titles, like the Tenkaichi series. The stages that FighterZ also had to offer were beautiful in their own right, having the location change if you hit your opponent hard enough really drove that sense of you being the mightiest warrior around.
Another thing I enjoyed about the game was the roster. Having characters from old school Dragonball mixed in with the new ones from Dragonball Super; each fighter has been created with their own individual super move. It shows that Bandai has huge respect for the series and that they don’t mess around just like their aforementioned previous titles.
Alright, lets get into the stuff that I didn’t enjoy; which was mainly the game play. The way the game played isn’t particularly awful or anything; in fact, it’s pretty great. However, the reason i did not like it because it is very similar to Street Fighter; which is a series I detest. In an objective sense, the game play is good in the way it has an easy-to-pick-up-difficult-to-master approach which can be played by any beginner but it has a lot more to offer if you want to sink your teeth in the combat system.
The game is good in an objective sense but it’s a game which is just not for me. If i was to give it a neutral rating it’ll get a 7/10 and I should add that it is totally deserving of all the critical praise it has gotten but if i was to give it a personal one it would have to be a 4/10.
