More than just a lyric; this catchy Lil Wayne line is also a valuable life lesson
Words by Charles Odugbesan
Great song. But I hope you actually took in this famous line from Lil Wayne and didn’t just sing along to it. “Don’t you ever get too comfortable.” And why not? Well, there are a few different topics you can relate this line to like relationships and work etcetera… but let’s use it in the case of personal development. In other words, how you can put this line into application and level up!
People talk a lot these days about wanting to be ‘the best version of themselves’ right? Be that through mental, physical or spiritual growth, people are always looking for or considering ways to improve. The only problem is… well usually there are three problems: impatience, laziness and working within your means. All of these things prevent you from picking up new skills, growing and broadening your horizons and ultimately becoming that ‘best version’.
Imagine writing out your name on a piece of paper 100 times and then doing the same thing with your opposite hand. Now, putting aside double hand cramp for one second, the first few times you try the latter, even you won’t be able to read what you’ve just written! But after 10, 20, 50, 100 tries guess what will start to happen? Impatience is one of the main reasons why an individual fails to learn and master a new skill or push their own boundaries. Of course, time is of the essence, but how often is time more detrimental than beneficial when it comes to working on yourself? One of the best things you can do is take time.
When thinking about laziness, one of the best examples you can use is going to the gym. A new year rolls around and too long have you been staring in the mirror dissatisfied at the figure staring back. So you sign up, buy a cool water bottle and some gym clothes and decide to make going to the gym one of your resolutions. January you start to ease your way in, February and March you keep a level of consistency. Then through April you start to slack and little excuses start to creep in – work, bad weather, general tiredness. Sure enough, May/June rolls around and you’ve fallen off completely! Sound like a familiar routine anyone? Without a level of consistency and hard work in whatever it is you are doing, you’re not likely to progress very far. Effort and good intentions must go hand in hand if you want results.
One more analogy. This one’s about lions. An alpha male is the top cat in his territory, and sure enough, he could live his life and settle in that territory, but he is always looking to expand. He’s prepared to step out of his own territory and into danger zones to challenge rivals and become the alpha male in a new area. Now let’s think. How do you expect to grow when you live and operate solely within your means? Switch it up! Try new things! When you push your limits and put yourself in uncomfortable situations you then give yourself the opportunity to develop. You can now do more and be more!
And if you don’t know the song I’ve been referring to in this article… here you go!!
