The topic of focus: Valentino Rossi
Recently 9 time Motorcycling Champion, arguably the greatest rider in history, Valentino Rossi recovered from a double leg fracture suffered in an accident last month. He had been declared fit to race this past weekend in Aragon, Spain and from start to finish was competitive, finishing an impressive 5th place – on practically one leg! Being a general sporting fan, I find it is very easy to draw inspiration from the incredible feats of professional athletes and Valentino’s case in particular proved just that.
To put things into perspective… Valentino suffered his crash on the 31st August. Now the usual prognosis for a double leg fracture is 12-16 weeks of healing, followed by rehabilitation; but being the elite athlete Valentino is, he was predicted to be back in just over a month. Bearing in mind that this was the same right leg he had broken back in 2010, 17 days later he was already back on a bike and ready to race a week later. For me, this demonstrated the ultimate show of will power, determination, but in particular, dedication.
The fact he chose to go completely against all medical advice and throughout the whole weekend successfully fight through the pain of an aggravated injury is remarkable. Sheer dedication. But aside from the oxford dictionary definition, this made me question what it is and what it means to be dedicated.
Dedication entails the effort you require over the talent you have. How many times have we heard of/ known someone who has a heap of talent and ability, but just isn’t willing to match that with a high work rate? Effort is key.
These are my thoughts.
Dedication is the stoppage time at the end of the game. That hour of overtime at the end of your shift. The extra 15 minutes women take getting their make up ready for a night out. In other words, if you are dedicated you will be willing to devote time to the cause. Whether you’re hitting central London or working a double shift covering your ‘sick’ friend.
Dedication requires going that little bit extra to achieve a goal. It forces you to step out of your comfort zone in order to excel. If no one ever sought to push boundaries, how would they know what they can really accomplish?
Dedication asks that you accept the necessary risks and sacrifices at hand if you are to achieve. If you have to miss a night out to finish the essay you have due at the end of the week, or because you have a game the next day then so be it. No one ever said that reaching a goal was easy.
And finally dedication is a measure of the love and passion that you have for someone or something. It means you never want to be separated from that passion and if so, you will be determined to reclaim it as soon as possible. Like a hobby you miss or someone you love. Dedicated is defined by your actions.
