Best Of E3 2016
WRITTEN BY JASON SEWALD
Gamers around the world have waited for this years E3 and have waited even longer for their favourite franchises to flex their 4K muscles and give them what they were hoping for. This years E3 has been entertaining in recent memory and if I’m going to be honest the most successful one yet, but there is of course the talk of who were the winners and losers, the dark horses and naturally I’ll be picking what I believed to be the best moments and games of this years E3 conference. So let’s get right to it.
Starting off with what was in my opinion a dark horse was the trailer for Forza Horizon 3 which was premiered at Microsoft’s press conference. As for racing games I have never been a great fan and haven’t really paid close attention, however that all changed once I laid eyes on the stunning visuals. The game will be set in Australia which is known to have beautiful scenery which I believe was perfectly expressed throughout the trailer, deserts, beaches, mountains all of these terrains had fantastic looking tracks and seeing the cars shredding then had me thinking that I won’t get anywhere without taking a screenshot of every sunset I come across while driving. The game will have four player campaign with drop-in and drop-out multiplayer, having said that it’ll be a great game to play with your friends and I have little to no doubt in my mind you’ll be pouring hours into it. The game comes out on the 27th September so if this piqued your interest make sure you pick it up.
Moving on to the Ubisoft press conference, who had the most entertaining press conference in my opinion, which involved the conference starting of with a great performance courtesy of the Movement Wizards of Just Dance 2017, and of course they were also there to promote the new game, yep you guessed it Just Dance 2017. The ever so charming Aisha Tyler was hosting the show and they had a lot to offer and worked a lot on VR games such as Eagle Flight but two games stood out for me. I was very impressed by the gameplay trailer of Ghost Recon Wildlands and South Park: The Fractured But Whole (if you say it out loud it sounds like fractured butthole). First of Ubisoft did announce Ghost Recon Wildlands at last years E3 and this year we were shown a more in depth mission involving a four player co-op gameplay. The trailer showed off a gorgeous re imagination of Bolivia if it was taken hostage by a drug cartel and you and your team of ghosts are deep behind the enemy lines to free them of their oppression. The game will be an open sandbox meaning that you can explore the country by yourself or with your buddies till your hearts content and do the missions how and when you see fit.
As for the second game which caught my eye, South Park has really out done themselves when they came with the surprise hit South Park: The Stick of Truth so I was eagerly awaiting with what they would come up with next and they did not disappoint. The story basically picks up from where Stick of Truth left off but not them role playing the same game, because at the end of the day they are all kids and get bored of playing the same games so they start playing superhero and hatch a plan to become a global franchise like Marvel or DC. The game brings back some of the shows funniest characters such as Cartman’s superhero alter ego The Coon, as for gameplay the game looks to have kept most of its charm which made the first so great and have improved on it such as using your environment to your advantage and much more. As for the release dates for the games Ghost Recon Wildlands is said to be out in early march 2017 and South Park will be available December 6th 2016.
Now let us go a few months back in time to Kanye West’s Yeezy season 3 premier, where he gave us a look at his new fashion line, the album and something which caught everyone off guard his very own videogame he debut the trailer at the Yeezy premier. We haven’t heard a lot of it since then, all we knew at the time was the name which is Only One and it was about how his mother reached the gates of heaven, but I am glad to say that we have received more info on it such as the developer he is working with and that is Encyclopaedia Pictura. Mr. West has been working with them on the game since 2015 and seems to have an All-Star cast of people helping him create it. As for when it will be out and what console it will be on sadly hasn’t been disclosed but my guess would have to be the Nintendo 3DS, the bright and calming visuals just seem perfect for this handheld. Kanye has always been a visionary and a man who puts his blood, sweat and tears in whatever field he steps in whether it’d be music or fashion and if he steps into the gaming world with the same attitude I can only see great things ahead for him.
Every year at E3, I always look forward to Sony’s press conference and this years has been very special to me and gaming fans alike because we have been graced by one of videogames greatest directors, the one and only Hideo Kojima. He is most notably known for the Metal Gear series which is arguably one of the greatest set of games in history, and he was here to show us his trailer for his new game Death Stranding developed by himself and his colleagues at Kojima Productions. The trailer itself didn’t seem to make much sense however he did say it has nothing to do with the actual game he just wanted us to show who he is going to be working with which, is none other than the Walking Dead fan favourite Norman Reedus. Once the camera gave us a close up of Normans face the theatre hall went up in flames because we thought that was it with these two heavy hitters working together after the whole Konami fiasco and the cancellation of heavily anticipated Silent Hill. The game hasn’t got a release date and we haven’t received much information as for what kind of game he is striving for all we know is that Kojima and Norman are together again to which I can only say the sky is the limit because there is nothing that they cannot achieve.
Before I end this I want give an honourable mention to a few games, such as the new Spider-Man which is coming to PS4 which is being developed by none other than Insomniac games who gave us the best games of our childhood such as Spyro and Ratchet and Clank, this really looks like a match made in heaven and really has me thinking why it took this long for these two to meet. The second game I want to mention is one that was at the Microsoft conference The Happy Few, the game really gave me a creepy bio shock vibe and if its anything I imagine it to be then we are in for one hell of a ride.
That’s all for my favourite moments and games what were yours? And what do you hope to see at next years E3?
