‘When I’m around certain people ill make different kind of music based off their energy’: An Interview with Misterrcha
Interview and Photos by Karan Teli
Misterrcha; the South London born musician just so happened to turn 22 today (Happy Birthday!). But, that’s probably not the biggest or most important thing about his life today. A year and a half in the making, Misterrcha’s new EP; Fluid, is finally here.
Ahead of its release, I sat down with Misterrcha to learn more about the man and the music.
You’re one of the most positive people I’ve met. Where does the energy come from?
It comes from wanting to self-improve and be the best version of myself. If I see the best in someone else, it rubs off on me and makes me want to excel. It’s like mutual energy bouncing back and forth.
Are you inspired by your friends, who are also on the rise in the music scene?
That’s a no-brainer. The way they carry themselves, their fearlessness and relentlessness. That inspiration comes out in my music. From the people I collaborate with people have that influenced the music directly, it all blends together.
Club culture has really influenced Fluid. Places like Shoreditch, Dalston, Hackney. Seeing the vibe in clubs and house parties.
What kind of music do they play at the places you go?
Hip-Hop, which is funny because I don’t make Hip-Hop. This EP, it’s alternative pop. But I make all kinds of music. I don’t really think of genres when I make music. When I’m around certain people ill make different kind of music based on their energy.
Fluid has been a work in progress. Misterrcha’s last EP, ‘The People’s Hands’ was created “during university. I made that in about 3 months, with the stress of uni right there. But I took my time with this one. About a year and a half. It’s been a while in the making.”
Yet the EP is only 6 songs. Did you manage to get out all the energy you wanted?
Definitely, but there’s a lot more coming. A lot more on different peoples projects too. Fluid is just the start. I’m very confident in these 6 songs.
Where does the name come from?
It came from the track listing. Every song is a different kind of sound. Very different. It gets you in a groove. It’s just very fluid.
Which artists influenced Fluid?
Jamie XX. Aphex Twin, Daft Punk.
Misterrcha started making music 6 years ago. His love for music and the way it allowed it to express himself overtook any previous dreams or aspirations he had. “I wanted to be a video game designer, but music started to resonate with me more. Now music’s taken over, I barely play video games. I’ve got a PS4 that I don’t even touch. That’s because I know with music, if you work hard and clock in the hours to improve, you’ll get the rewards.”
Can we expect any collaborations on Fluid?
On every song except one. All female singers. It’s very global. Singers from South Korea, London, America. Soundcloud is so powerful. You hear someone you like, you message them and now they’re on your EP.
