The Man who Puts Porn on Hoodies: An Interview with Malcolm Bracey
Interview by Karan Teli
Imagine going on the page of a rapper you like, in this case Thouxanbanfauni to find a photo of him wearing a hoodie with a hardcore porn still on it. Then you find out that the brand itself is called Porn Hoodies; simple but daring and controversial at the same time. I had so many things I wanted to know. This is what led me to Malcolm Bracey; the Lone Ranger behind PornHoodies.
14HQ: It’s quite an outrageous and outlandish idea to put porn stills on clothes. How did you first come up with the idea?
Malcolm Bracey: One day I was in the mall and in the middle of the mall you could make your own sweatshirt and I just wanted to put something crazy on it. The craziest thing I could think of was 2 girls that were fisting each other. That was the idea I thought of.
That’s the first thing you thought of?
Pretty much. I got it made, wore it and I got kicked out of the mall. That’s when I knew it was a crazy idea. The fact that it affected people that much, I knew it was absolutely crazy.
Are other people around you from Wisconsin doing similar things like making brands?
Not really. Most people want to be rappers. Ever since Chief Keef, everyone decided to be a rapper. I’ve always been making clothes.
Is PornHoodies just you or do you have a team?
Literally just me. I do everything from coming up with the designs to taking my own pictures. I do my own promotion. I have some help, but 99% it is me. I do the packaging and everything.
How long has PornHoodies been active?
I’ve been making clothes since I was 16, but PornHoodies started about 2 years ago.
How do you decide what picture is making it onto a piece of clothing?
With the brand, it’s all about funny. I don’t care what picture is the nastiest or craziest or whatever. ‘Can it make somebody laugh when they see it?’ Humour is the most important thing to me. It started as a troll and now, it’s what I do for a living.
Do you plan to move away from Wisconsin to grow the brand?
For sure. I want to move to L.A one day. Every time I’m there, I do something that helps my career. I had my own booth at ComplexCon. That helped my career a lot. All the big brands were there. I felt like I wasn’t supposed to be there, but I did get my shit out to a lot of people.
I saw a picture of Thouxanban wearing PornHoodies, is that how you met him?
Yeah I met him at ComplexCon. We actually stay in contact. It wasn’t just him. Wifis Funeral. Yung Gleesh. Xavier Wulf. It was a lot of people.
Who is somebody you want to see wearing PornHoodies one day?
I want it to be somebody who you would never expect. Jim Carrey.
Who is somebody you want featured on PornHoodies?
Alexis Texas. I also want Bridget the Midget. I want a picture of me and Bridget the Midget kicking it on a couch. That would be tight.
You must get stopped on the street all the time. What is the reaction usually like?
It’s weird. Living in Wisconsin, I’m already looked at because I’m like the only black guy. To be black and have porn on my hoodie; some people laugh, some get pissed. I always see people taking pictures.
Does the reaction differ dependant on gender?
Usually not. Girls here usually like it. I hang around with a lot of strippers and lesbians, so my demographic is prone to it. There is a group of feminist women who totally don’t like what I’m doing at all. They’ve approached me before. I always hear them talk amongst themselves.
Do you have plans to work with other companies or brands in the future? If so, doing what?
I met someone from Playboy Magazine at ComplexCon, so that’s already in the works. Work on a clothing collaboration. I’d like to take my own photos, be able to get access to play Playboy models and house one day. A long term deal.
How has life changed since you launched PornHoodies?
I quit my job at H&M and now I do PornHoodies full time. It’s scary, to have to be on your shit twice as much now. You’ve really got to grind it out to get paid. I get to travel more, do everything I wanted to do with my life. I meet different artists. I used to put these people on a higher pedestal, but now they’re like a text message away.
