You may not know his name, but you know his work

Dragon Ball. There is no man or woman on this planet who has not seen or heard about Dragon Ball from your favourite rapper, and the man behind this iconic franchise is Akira Toriyama. Although most people may not know him by name alone, they will definitely know him by his creations such as the aforementioned Dragon Ball and works such as Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger and many more works to which I will get to later, so let’s get into why Akira Toriyama is the most important man in pop culture.
There is truly only one reason why Toriyama is so important to pop culture; Dragon Ball, or more specifically Dragon Ball Z. No anime (or manga for that matter) has made the culture shifting waves that the Dragon Ball Z anime did and to say that is definitely no exaggeration. Toriyama had an entire generation of kids from all over the world glued to their TV screens waiting for the epic conclusion between Frieza and Goku, the first time we saw Goku turning super Saiyan or the entire Buu saga. There are way to many moments for me to squeeze them all in here, but my point is that these moments have been seared into our brains and we will never forget them, and Dragon Ball is still going strong to this day, with its latest series Dragon Ball Super and the Broly movie reboot garnering even more fans from the younger generation . So if a show is going on strong across generations, I think it’s safe to say that he has earned a spot in the hall of fame of pop culture.
Moving on from that last point, Toriyama has had more than his hands in video games creating titles such as Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest and of course, the Dragon Ball games. Thesiyama alone, but his unique character designs pushed the visual aspects on top of the game play and writing done by Square Enix and Bandai into the G.O.A.T realm. However, work is never over for Toriyama because his latest involvement in games is that he designed characters specifically for the upcoming Jump Force so we’re very excited to see them come to live when the game comes out.
Lastly, Akira Toriyama has dabbled in fashion as well most notably his sneaker line with Adidas which they have released last year in 2018 on top of clothing such as hoodies and trousers, down to merchandise such as key rings, figurines and posters. All the things he has released it has almost always sold out in unreal fashion and that looks like it’s not going to change anytime soon.
To finish, Akira Toriyama has had his hand in almost anything under the sun and at the current age of 63 he doesn’t look like slowing down any time soon and all that makes me say is that I wish him a long life and hope he can surprise us with his wonderful work for years to come.
