12 Albums to Look Forward to in 2018
WRITTEN BY KARAN TELI
2017 gave us some gems. But, we want 2018 to be bigger and better. More albums. More new artists. More experimental music. More great music.
Here are 12 albums, which have either been confirmed or highly speculated to be released, that I am looking forward to in 2018.
A$AP ROCKY – TESTING
This album should be coming any day now. With the album artwork, name and incredible track list leaking online, along with Rocky playing teasers for fans on Instagram Live, all signs point to Testing being released first quarter 2018. Rocky himself promised fans the album would be released in 2017, so it’s almost a guarantee that we’ll be getting it in 2018. No more Cozy Tapes stuff, we want solo Rocky.
BROCKHAMPTON – TEAM EFFORT
3 studio albums in 2017. 3 of the best albums of 2017. The Internet’s first boyband have already announced album number 4 for 2018. The Saturation Era is behind us, so it will be interesting to see the direction that Brockhampton goes and what kind of music were in store for. I’m turning on post notifications for Kevin Abstact’s Twitter, because I don’t want to miss anything.
CARDI B – UNTITLED
Cardi B was breaking records in 2017. The first solo female Hip-Hop song to be #1 on Billboard since 1998, 3 songs in the top 10 at the same time and countless awards for Bodak Yellow. Eyes are sure to be all over Cardi in 2018, to see if her album lives up to the Bodak Yellow expectations, but fans will be there to support every step of the way.
DRAKE – UNTITLED
For the first time in nearly a decade, we had a year that was not dominated by Drake. After releasing More Life, he took a step back. While he has been busy; getting deals with Top Boy and Netlix and creating meme-worthy moments courtside at Raptors games, he’s been quiet with his music. His latest Instagram posts tease that he’s been in the studio, and I doubt we will have back to back years without Drake dominance. He’s sure to return in 2018.
FRANK OCEAN – UNTITLED
I’m not sure where to start. The man who tweeted back in 2012 ‘5 albums before 30’ celebrated his 30th birthday in some Paris Is Burning style in 2017, but we’ve only got 4 projects. ‘I did finish the album, I just ain’t put that bitch out yet’. Blonded Radio provides us with some gems to fill 2017, including the years best song, and in his essay within I-D Magazine, he told fans ‘if you liked 2017, you’ll love 2018’. I’m at the edge of my seat.
FKA TWIGS – LP2
The apparent heir to Bjork’s throne has been quiet for a couple years now. Her last project, the M3LL155X EP, was 5 songs long, released in 2015. Since then, not a word. Her long lasting relationship with Robert Pattison ended last year, so we know she’s got subjects too discuss. The long awaited LP2 should be coming sooner than later.
GOOD MUSIC – CRUEL WINTER
Who’s knows anymore? Cruel Winter was on my list of most anticipated albums of 2017, and we got nothing. Not even a single, snippet, teaser or word of the album. The entire GOOD Music family has been working on solo projects and I doubt 2018 will be any different. But, they’ve been working on this album for years now, and now that GOOD Music has its own SoundCloud Page, which was created on New Years Eve, we may finally, finally be in luck.
IAMDDB – UNTITLED
You haven’t heard Trap like this before. Jazz-inspired Trap Music from Manchester’s very own IAMDDB was some of the most unique sounding music released in 2017. Her debut album is scheduled for release at some point in 2017. Incase you haven’t heard her yet, start with ‘Hood Rich Vol. 3’, which will keep you going until it gets here.
KANYE WEST – TURBO GRAFX 16
It’s been a quiet year for Yeezus. 2016 was packed with hospitalisation, Trump meetings and Kim Kardashian’s robbery. 2017 was nowhere near as hectic. Stories of him being ‘holed up at the top of a mountain’ working on new music were being reported, but nothing came to fruition. The last time Kanye worked in such silence and hidden fashion was 2010, before the release of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. A second omen perhaps?
PUSHA T – KING PUSH
Originally stated for a 2017 release, for whatever reason, the album was delayed. In a recent performance, Pusha apologised to fans before letting them know the entirety of King Push is too be produced by Kanye West. The whole thing. That alone puts it on this list.
SERPENTWITHFEET – UNTITLED
Josiah Wise had a quiet 2017. The Gospel and Soul inspired 2016 EP, ‘blisters’, was some of 2016’s most creative and artistic work. 2018 should be the year we finally get his debut album. I encourage all fans of music to check out ‘blisters’, you’re missing out on some great music if you don’t.
TRAVIS SCOTT – ASTROWORLD
Travis Scott had a busy 2017. Worldwide tours, opening for Kendrick Lamar, feature after feature, a collaboration album with Quavo and Kylie Jenner. Yet, somehow, he is due for an even bigger 2018. The album Astroworld was announced even before the release of Birds. 2 Travis Scott albums have been released since then, so we can expect that he has been saving his best work for Astroworld. Songs like Butterfly Effect, along with him mentioning that Stevie Wonder will be a contributor on the album, have me extra excited for what is to come in 2018.
